Why We Need to Accomplish This.
Alex is a bright and curious student at a local school in the Rio Grande Valley. One day, he is introduced to chess. At first, it’s just a few moves on a classroom board, but soon he is captivated. He loves the strategy, the challenge, and the thrill of thinking several steps ahead. Chess quickly becomes a favorite part of his day, sparking excitement and dreams of becoming a strong player.
When Alex finally has the chance to compete against peers from other schools, his excitement turns to disappointment. Without access to experienced coaching or structured training, he struggles against children who have had extra guidance and preparation. Losing more games than he wins, his enthusiasm for the game begins to fade.
In the Rio Grande Valley, a gap exists: over 100 schools cannot afford outside chess coaching, while other schools do. These schools benefit from experienced instructors and advanced training. While teachers at schools without resources do their best, it is difficult for them to compete with specialized chess instructors, leaving talented students at a disadvantage simply because of what school they attend.
The goal of RGV Chess and Learning Center is to change this. By partnering with local businesses and community supporters, we aim to provide expert coaching, structured programs, and competitive preparation for all students — leveling the playing field and giving every child the chance to develop their chess skills, build confidence, and fall in love with the game without fear of discouragement.
Note: Alex is a fictional example, but the challenges described are very real for many students across our community.
